Data Backup Solutions for Access Control Systems

Most access systems use a database system that is not normally backed up by popular backup software and services.  The database must either be manually backed up or special software must be used to generate a backup file that can be backed up by backup systems.

Traditional Data Backup

Each access system handles data differently.  A backup file must be generated in order to backup to a drive or the cloud.  The database files used by the system are locked and therefor unable to be backed up by the backup software.  Some systems can automatically generate these files and thereby can be backed up as normal files by traditional backup methods.  Often the directories in which these file are stored are excluded from backup so they must be manually selected for backup in the software interface.

Cloud Backup

Like traditional file backup. cloud backup solutions such as Backblaze (recommended), iDrive, Carbonite, and Microsoft OneDrive do not capure the databases unless a backup file is generated first.

Image Backup

Image backup using software such as Acronis True Image can backup the entire system while it’s operating using a volume shadow copy that captures the entire hard drive including the database.  This is an excellent option that enables full backup with quick and easy restoration but generates very large files that cannot be backed up to the cloud.

Verify your Backup

Once a backup solution is setup, it is important to verify that the backup files are indeed included in the the backup.

Move your Access System to the Cloud

Moving your system to the cloud is another way to ensure proper backup while also realizing the other benefits of a hosted system.

CVDI Atrium

All data for CDVI Atrium panels is stored in the primary panel.  The included software package synchronizes the data with the panel and thereby creates a backup just by running the software.  To backup to the cloud, you need to manually create a backup file using the Atrium Software, use an external backup application for MS SQL Server, or create a script file to execute a T-SQL backup command and automate using task scheduler.  This backup file can be backed up using traditional backup software or a cloud backup service.
